Loving Jesus, Loving Life

Lake Michigan vacation

We have never taken a family vacation before. Luke and I went on a short camping vacation in Indiana during the first summer of our marriage, when I was 5 months preggo with Gracie. Then Luke and I left Grace and Caleb with his parents so I could accompany him on a business trip to Tampa when I was 5 months preggo with Ava. But that’s the extent of it. We’ve never done a family vacation.

Until this month!

We were so thrilled to be able to use a cottage right on Lake Michigan, because of the generosity of a friend.

We arrived on a Sunday evening, as night was falling. We could see the beautiful view of lake, but soon it was dark and we could just hear the waves.

The cottage sleeps 12, and Caleb and Grace were especially thrilled with their sleeping arrangements! They slept up in a loft area that they could only get to by climbing a ladder.

Our first morning there, a storm rolled in from the lake. It rained all morning, so we decided to head to Lewis Farm Market and Petting Farm to kill some time and entertain the children. We browsed the market for about 30 seconds before hitting the free petting zoo, which was a pretty stinking cool petting zoo. Not just goats and chickens like at John Ball Zoo. Nope – they had bunnies, donkeys, goats, miniature horses, wallabies, a zebra, and our all-time favorite – a camel. We tried really hard to get a good picture of Luke and me with the camel, but it was a no-go.

Praise the Lord, the skies cleared that afternoon, and we were able to enjoy the view from the hammock…

I might have taken a nap there…

Our kids were able to enjoy some swim time after naps. And then our dear friends the Perrys joined us at the cottage. (Remember the cottage sleeps 12? Perfect for our two families of six!) We weren’t planning to let the kids swim that night, because we didn’t have enough time before bed. But we let them stick their feet in the water with the admonition, “Don’t get wet….”

“…or dirty.”

The next day was perfect beach weather. We spent a lot of time down by the water – swimming, playing in the sand, and kayaking.

Here are our two families (and a sunset), taken before the Perrys had to head back to “real life…”

On the Perrys’ way out of town, we all hit the ice cream shop at Country Dairy, where they have $.75 kids’ cones – and thus, I will be a loyal customer for the rest of my life (or, you know, whenever I happen to be in New Era, MI again).

On our final day at the cottage, it rained again, but cleared up enough for all of us to enjoy the beach again. Then, as the children napped, we packed and cleaned and were out of there by dinnertime. It was SUCH a relaxing, wonderful vacation. I LOVED being so close to the water. God’s creation is so beautiful!

And to top it all off, on the way home, we found out that Caleb can spell his name…and write it in completely mirrored letters. I love my life.

  1. This is awesome. Such a fun time! Glad you got to enjoy the beach and go to such a cool vacation home. Great pictures of the kids! Mom and Dad (Gma & Gpa) will have a blast with these when they get home.

A – Ava is hilarious in these photos, she always seems to be heading her own direction and having a blast doing it!
B – Caleb is a smarty pants! Where did he learn to mirror letters??? Goofball.
    C – Love you guys!

  2. We are enjoying the pictures now. Dad & I are in a library while the kids are playing game cube at the cabin. Love the picture of Ava’s ice cream! She is such a scream! Love the scenery, too. Praise the Lord for good friends with lots of money.

    Miss you all!

  3. What a fun vacation! You can definitely tell the whole family enjoyed themselves. You really did have a fabulous view from the cabin. Gorgeous!

The “don’t get wet” picture is by far my favorite. Kids are too much fun.

    Love you guys!

  4. Ah… the mirrored letters technique. Nice! Looks like an awesome vacation to me! The few times I have been to Lake Michigan was great. The sunsets there have a certain look to them… and I like it. So glad your family had a wonderful R & R vacation… you deserve it!!

  5. Country Dairy is the best! Every first Saturday in July, they have a huge free day…free ice cream, cheese, kid’s games, tours, hay rides – it’s fun!

  6. Looks like a great time! family vacations are the best and some thing to splurge on (even if it’s just camping). Memories last longer than stuff!
