Loving Jesus, Loving Life

Saturday!

The house is quiet. I’m the only one awake! Even Luke and our extra-little-munchkin-for-the-weekend are napping! What a wonderful Saturday!

I’ve realized that Saturday tends to be the easiest time for me to blog. And here we are! So, let’s sit down together and catch up.

This past month or so, I have had the pleasure of spending Fridays at home with my friend Amber and all our six children (ages 6, 4, 3, 1, 1, and 3 months). The kids have loved playing together and eating lunch together. And Amber and I have especially loved spending time learning how we can make our marriages better through a book study, and learning practical skills from each other.

The first couple of times we met, I taught Amber how to make dinner rolls and cinnamon rolls (with the bread machine – SO easy!). And then yesterday – I AM STILL SO EXCITED – she gave me my first sewing lesson! Woo-hoo! I have so much wanted to learn to sew these last couple of years, but never had the opportunity to learn. And now I do! I’m pretty certain that this is real-life mentoring…and I love it!

So, with Amber’s help, I made our first project together – a bag! Here’s a shot of the beauty that now rests on my shoulder…

Almost as exciting, we had some material left over, so Amber made Grace a new holder for her insulin pump! She’s really been needing a new one, and Amber just whipped one out with no pattern or anything! She’s wonderful!

Not sure how she’ll feel about me posting a picture of her, but here’s Amber working on part of Grace’s pump holder.

And here’s the final product! (Not great lighting, sorry.)

My mind is spinning with all the projects we could do…Curtains for the kids’ room and school room, coordinating bedding for the kids, purses, more pump cases…Ahhh, looks like I might need to only ask for Hobby Lobby gift cards for my birthday / Christmas for a while!

I feel like I have so much more to share, but I also have so many things to accomplish today, so I’d better run. Sometime soon I’ll show you pictures of the newly painted school room and kids’ room…But not today! Maybe next Saturday!

  1. Oh awesome! I need to improve my sewing skills too. There are SO MANY things I want to learn to make!

Really cute bag & insulin holder, by the way!

My friend Ashley Carter taught herself to sew a couple of years ago. I thought you might like looking at her Etsy account for inspiration! http://www.etsy.com/shop/AshleyNicoleCarter?ref=pr_shop_more#

Also, I shop at Joanns (GREAT Christmas gift ideas there), and I signed up for their coupon list. You could get away with NEVER buying a full price item there if you wait for the coupons. I regularly get 40-50% off coupons on single items. Also, I personally think they have a way better fabric selection than Hobby Lobby.

Let us know how your creative projects go! I hope to start being more creative myself in the future.

  2. Wow, impressive handy-work, Lacey! I must admit sewing is beyond my dreams of craftiness at this point, but I wish you the best! Curtains and bedding does sound like a fun project. I loooove the sassy pump holder! Too cute. I am sure Grace will someday have one to coordinate with all her clothing. She’s too organized not to. 🙂

Can’t wait to see pictures of the painting you did!

    love,
    Buzz

  3. Lacey, you never cease to amaze me! Congrats on the sewing project. My first one was a nightgown–my mom figured if I messed it up a little bit I could still wear it because who would see it other than family? Also, they aren’t very fitted…nowadays I seem to only use the sewing machine for mending. Not nearly as fun as the projects you are thinking about, but necessary, I
    guess.

Have a question for any of the readers…I am looking for a book-type wedding present (for next Saturday…no comments about procrastination, please!) and was wondering if you had any recommendations? Thanks!

  4. The Love Dare with the study guide…also, Moments Together by Dennis & Barbara Rainy

  5. A good cookbook is always a wonderful present. At least, I love ’em! Can’t get enough recipes.

  6. Erin – we have a nice JoAnn Fabrics here, but I like to shop at Hobby Lobby because they’re a Christian company. They are closed on Sundays to allow their employees to worship, and they play Christian music at their stores. AND they almost always have 40% off coupons on their website…But that’s not to say that I wouldn’t shop at JoAnn’s or Michael’s or something! Oh, and is Ashley the one who made your cute black and white purse? Her etsy stuff is really cute!

    Betsey – Thanks, sista!

MCAunt – I like Sarah’s and Erin’s suggestions….And I would add “Created to Be His Help Meet” by Debi Pearl, and I’ve also heard good things about “From Blushing Bride to Wedded Wife” by Marla Taviano. I guess if you wanted a book for both of them (not just the wife), I’ve also heard good things about “Love and Respect” by Emerson Eggerichs. Of course, that’s all hearsay. If you want a little bit of a different topic, “Financial Peace Revisited” by Dave Ramsey would be great for a couple just starting off together. Anyway, good luck! 🙂 Come back and let us know what you choose!

  7. Lacey, I didn’t know that about Hobby Lobby! Is that true nationally or is just your local “franchise” (is that what it’s called?) owned by a Christian? Yes, it’s true they have good coupons too. If you plan it right, you can always get really great priced stuff. I like to support fellow Christians, so it’s nice to know about another great company. I do wish their fabric selection was as good as Joanns though!

Oh, and yes Ashley was the one that made my b&w purse. She also made my bright orange diaper bag. 🙂 Love it! Her Etsy stuff IS cute, I love to see what new stuff she’s come up with. She recently got her purses displayed in a California store, so I am excited to see her business grow! It’s cool to know someone before they were “famous”, lol!

  8. PS I forgot (hehe, I keep plugging her), but Ashley also has an Etsy fabric shop if you’re interested, and regularly has good coupon codes for holidays or giveaways at friends sites.

    Ok, all done advertising.

  9. Thanks so much for the suggestions folks! I will let you know what I do.
About Hobby Lobby– the national franchise is Christian. They put wonderful full page ads in our newspaper for Christmas and Easter. We are fortunate to have one about 3 minutes down the road. Don’t get in there nearly as much as I would like to though.
